HOW TO CREATE YOUR PERSONAL SOCIAL SECURITY ACCOUNT

A free and secure My SSA account provides personalized tools for everyone, whether you receive benefits or not. You can use your account to request a replacement Social Security card and estimate your future retirement benefits. You can also use it to check the status of an application and manage the benefits you already receive.

If you are applying for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits or want to manage your Social Security account online, creating a MySSA account is an essential first step. A My Social Security (MySSA) account gives you secure online access to your personal Social Security information. This includes your earnings record, benefit estimates, and application status.

The SSA no longer accepts walk in appointments at the local offices. Therefore, to file an application, you must do so over the phone or on the SSA’s website. From now on, the SSA will focus on providing online services to those seeking benefits. Despite the fact that this isn’t always a feasible option, the SSA is doing it anyway. They have been moving toward the online process for years, but their plans are almost always hindered by reality. First, there is the reality that many people don’t have computers. Even if they do, many people are not computer savvy.

Unfortunately, the move to a computer centric system forces millions of retirees and individuals with disabilities to use it or lose it. Presumably, closing local SSA offices  to the public and forcing people to file online will save money. It remains to be seen. But, what we can see already is that there is a larger barrier to access services.

The public can’t get through to the SSA on the phone. The SSA wants people to use the online system, but then insists that claimants must confirm they are filing the application with a phone call. That is hard to do when the wait on the phone can be hours. All of these issues can be blamed on DOGE.

In the press, DOGE claims to have saved taxes payers $160 billion. But that is simply not true. DOGE cuts have cost taxpayers $135 billion. They have put tens of thousands of federal employees on paid leave (which means they aren’t working for the public). Then, DOGE had to rehire fired workers. All of this chaos comes at a cost to the taxpayer.

WHAT YOU NEED BEFORE YOU START

Furthermore, DOGE’s “$160 billion in savings” is far less than Musk’s goal of cutting government spending by $2 trillion. Musk’s calculations also don’t count the cost to taxpayers of the multiple lawsuits challenging DOGE’s actions. Savings isn’t happening. There can be no true “saving” unless Trump decides to cut federal programs like Social Security and Medicare. We  all rely on those programs and Trump vowed not to touch these programs. So, time will tell if  he is telling the truth.

STEP BY STEP INSTRUCTIONS: CREATE YOUR MY SSA ACCOUNT

STEP 1: OPEN THE SOCIAL SECURITY WEBSITE

First, turn on your computer and open your internet browser.

Second, type this in www.ssa.gov. That will take to the official Social Security Administration website:
When you reach the first page, click the blue button that says “Sign In/Up” in the top right corner of the page. Then, choose “my Social Security” from the drop down menu.

STEP 2: CHOOSE “Create an Account”

Click the link that says “Create an Account” under the Sign In section. You’ll be directed to a page that explains the benefits of having a MySSA account.

Click the “Create an Account” button to begin.

STEP 3: CHOOSE A SIGN IN METHOD

You will be given two options:

  1. Login.gov – A secure login used by many U.S. government agencies.

  2. ID.me – A third party service that verifies your identity with documents and a video selfie.

Most users choose Login.gov. If you already have an account with Login.gov, then you can use it to sign in. Otherwise, create a new Login.gov account by entering your email. You must then create a strong password and verifying your identity.

STEP 4: VERIFY YOUR IDENTITY

The SSA requires identity verification to protect your information. Depending on the method you choose, you may be asked to:

STEP 5: REVIEW AND AGREE TO THE TERMS OF MY SSA TERMS OF SERVICE

Once your identity is confirmed, you will be sent back to the SSA website. Then, you will need to review the MySSA Terms of Service and agree to continue.

Review the terms. Click “Next” to proceed.

STEP 6: SET UP EXTRA SECURITY

To protect your account, the SSA will ask you to set up multi-factor authentication. You can choose to receive a security code via text message. Also, you can choose to receive a code through your email. Or, you can confirm your identity through an authenticator app each time you log in.

STEP 7: ACCESS YOUR MY SSA ACCOUNT THROUGH YOUR DASHBOARD

Additionally, your attorney can only charge an attorney fee if they win your case. In other words, if you do not win your benefits, then you do not pay an attorney fee. This means that your attorney has worked for up to two years on your case for free. So, if you don’t get benefits, then your attorney doesn’t get paid.
